    Sandalwood has traditionally been regarded as one of the purest substances and is valued for its cooling properties, its medicinal value as well as lovely fragrance.
    Turning the sandalwood beads while chanting is supposed to have therapeutic properties that enhance calmness and a positive frame of mind.
     All malas or beaded strings are strung with 108 prayer beads among which there is a special bead called the Sumeroo.
     At the time of reciting of the mantra, the counting of the beads should begin with the bead right after the Sumeroo bead.
     When the last bead is counted, one is back to the Sumeroo bead from where the recitation began.
    One should then start counting in the reverse order.
     The Sumeroo bead is never counted or skipped over.
     Different kinds of malas have different properties.
    There are two kinds of Sandalwood bead malas.
     The white one is used for peace.
     The red one is used especially for the attainment of general prosperity.
     It is used in the worship of the Goddesses Durga, Laxmi and Tripura Sundari.
