| Panchmukha Hanuman |
The five faced Hanuman icon is reckoned to be the most powerful form of this god. The five faced Hanuman icon’s primary purpose is to protect the house in which it resides. The ten hands, holding a bristling array of weapons, are symbolic devices to keep all manner of threatened negativity away from the devotee. It is supposed to provide protection from fire, floods, cyclones and so on, the entire gamut of natural calamities as well as - and this might be the most important - from the evil eye. The five heads represent the noble animals - horse, boar, lion, Vanara (not monkey) and man, each symbolic of manifold virtues like courage, steadfastness, valor, determination, intelligence and so forth. Traditionally this image is kept in the Northern part of the room, i.e. facing the south, or else it faces the main door to keep at bay all negativity that may seek to enter. It should never be kept in the southern part of the room, i.e. facing north. Hanuman is also the patron god of intellectuals and ignorance and stupidity are not supposed to be able to survive where such an image is kept, at least according to the tradition. This form of Hanuman was once the most popular and it is heartening to see its revival. Height: 13.8 cms (5.4'') Width: 10.8 cms (4.3'') |
